Sunshine (2007)

Directed by Danny Boyle
107 min
R

This is another end of the world sci fi where the earth unites and sends it's best astronauts into great unknown to try and stop mankind's impending doom. I know I know this has been done like 10 times in the last decade but when I found out Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) was directing my interest was pricked. The basic premise is the sun is dying so we send a nuclear bomb into the sun to try and kickstart everyone's favorite star and save the human race. Sounds lame right? Yes it does, but aside from an unoriginal plot and some sketchy physics (its sci fi remember) this movie was quite refreshing.

Where the movie succeeded was its intense atmosphere. We all know everything is going to go wrong eventually but I felt on the edge of my seat waiting for it to happen. Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later, Batman Begins) and Chris Evans (Fantastic 4) both did excellent jobs with their roles of disliking each other while still remaining true to the mission, they created some good tension without getting cheesy. Most of the time I find myself screaming in my mind...what are you doing that for oh my god you are ruining everything, which a lot of the time ruins the whole movie, but there was always reasons behind actions. I also enjoyed how the movie focused on just the mission and its crew as apposed to the other movies in this vain like Armageddon where you get an hour long backstory and you just know its gonna end in a sob fest. All in all I highly recommend if you are a fan of sci fi.
